Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refineries Amid Escalating Aerial Attacks

Ukraine launched long range drone strikes on August 8 targeting two oil refineries in Russia. The General Staff of Ukraine reported direct hits on the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar Krai and the Syrzan Oil Refinery in Samara Oblast, both of which experienced fires. The Ilsky facility has a capacity of approximately 6.6 million metric tons of crude oil per year, while the Syrzan plant, owned by Rosneft, has a capacity of about 8.5 million metric tons. Ukrainian officials stated these facilities are used to support the Russian military. Local Russian authorities reported that five people were injured in the attack on the Ilsky refinery.

Simultaneously, Russia carried out aerial attacks on Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that at least five people were killed, including a grandmother, grandfather, and their three year old grandson. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed these strikes targeted a fuel depot and a production facility for the FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile, though they provided no evidence for these claims.

In a separate incident in the Krasnodar region, Russian authorities closed beaches in the city of Guelendzhik following a drone attack. Reports indicate that seven people, including three children, died and 47 others were injured when a drone exploded on a beach. Russian officials described this as an attack on civilian infrastructure, while some reports suggest the target was a hotel for military industry specialists.
