The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Friday to extend the existing arms embargo on Sudan's western Darfur region for one month. The brief extension provides more time for negotiations regarding a proposal by the United States to expand the embargo to cover the entire country.
US Ambassador Jeff Bartos stated that the current sanctions regime is over 20 years outdated and insufficient for the current war. The US is proposing a nationwide ban to pressure warring parties to end a conflict that began in April 2023. Bartos also urged the council to include measures against conflict related sexual violence, kidnapping for ransom, and attacks on humanitarian personnel.
Russia and Sudan have opposed the expansion. Russia's deputy UN ambassador Anna Evstigneeva stated that Moscow would not allow any broadening of restrictions. Sudan's UN Ambassador Al-Harith Mohamed argued that a total arms embargo violates the UN Charter's guarantee regarding a country's right to self defence and sovereignty.
The original embargo on Darfur was established following violence that began in 2003. The current conflict has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced approximately 13 million people, leading to famine in parts of the country.
