A glacier collapse on the border of Nepal and China triggered massive floods that left at least 1,399 people dead and more than 5,500 missing. Robert Rohde, a chief scientist at Berkeley Earth, reported that the mountain section experienced unprecedented heat before the disaster. Data from the ERA5 climate model and 14 high altitude weather stations show that temperatures at 5,200 meters averaged five degrees Celsius between August 21 and 26. This exceeds the previous 55 year record of four degrees Celsius for that period. Rohde stated that without human induced climate change, such a temperature pattern would likely occur only once every several thousand years.
Other experts suggest the heat may have degraded permafrost, which acts as a cement for rocky walls, or created liquid water that infiltrated mountain fractures. Satellite imagery also showed significant snowmelt in the days preceding the event. Despite these findings, some researchers remain cautious. Kristen Cook of Grenoble Alpes University noted that high temperatures do not automatically equal a collapse, suggesting the rock may have already been at a breaking point. Meanwhile, a Beijing based satellite company redirected six satellites to capture sharp images of the disaster zone. Nepal recently observed a national day of mourning to honor the victims.
