The United States and Iran exchanged significant military strikes starting Tuesday, September 1, marking the most intense barrage since July. The US military targeted air defenses, radar systems, and maritime assets along Iran's southern coast. Iran retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks against US assets in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Iraq. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed deep alarm over the civilian casualties and called for an immediate cessation of military action.
The conflict has caused global energy prices to spike, with Brent crude rising to approximately 95 dollars. In the US, reports indicate the war is unpopular, with some polls showing a majority of Americans oppose the conflict ahead of November midterm elections. While President Trump has dismissed the elections as a factor in his strategy, some reports suggest top aides are pushing to prevent further escalation until after the vote.
