- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The United States military struck three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against two US Navy warships. US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the targeted vessels, including the M/T Downy off Kharg Island, the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and the M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman, were part of a multibillion dollar shadow network used to fund the IRGC and its proxies. CENTCOM stated that the M/T Kylo, which was unladen, was completely destroyed after the crew was ordered to abandon ship. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of CENTCOM, stated that the strikes were intended to impose a higher economic cost on Iran for targeting US ships. No US personnel were injured in the initial missile attacks, which a US aircraft carrier and destroyer successfully evaded.
Iran responded to the strikes by claiming its naval forces targeted three oil tankers on unauthorized routes in the Strait of Hormuz and three other US affiliated vessels. The IRGC also claimed to have attacked a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer with ballistic missiles, asserting that the warships were forced to retreat after suffering damage. The Pentagon has not confirmed these specific claims. Additionally, the IRGC reported attacking a US naval drone attempting to enter a protected zone in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that there were no casualties among the crews of the hit tankers and that some were evacuated via lifeboats.
This exchange occurs within a broader six month conflict that began in February. The US has implemented a counter blockade of Iranian ports and announced sanctions against a Turkish bank, Golden Global Bank, for facilitating IRGC transactions. Iran has maintained a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Some reports indicate the conflict has caused domestic political pressure for the Trump administration as US midterm elections approach. Recent events also include a US strike on a wedding in southern Iran that killed four people and a February attack in Minab that killed at least 156 people, mostly schoolchildren, which the US military attributed to a targeting error.
