US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday to discuss a proposal to end the war in Ukraine. President Donald Trump stated that the pair are bringing a concrete plan to resolve the conflict before they travel to Kyiv on Sunday. Upon their arrival at Vnukovo Airport, the envoys were greeted by Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev. This visit follows a recent trip to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe and the attendance of the Russian finance minister at a G20 gathering in North Carolina.
In coordination with the diplomatic mission, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a three day pause in airstrikes against Kyiv starting at midnight Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also committed to a pause in strikes against Moscow through Monday to ensure the safety of the negotiators. Despite these agreements, several reports indicate that fighting continued in other regions. Russian strikes on Saturday targeted a steel plant in the Dnipro region, killing between four and five people, and hit airports in Kyiv and Boryspil. President Zelensky described the airport attacks as a reaction to the possibility of the US delegation flying into Ukraine, as the country's airspace has been closed since February 2022.
Significant gaps remain between the two warring nations. The Kremlin has stated that its position requiring Ukraine to cede four claimed regions and abandon plans to join NATO remains unshakeable. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to reject any deal that involves ceding territory. While the US envoys seek to break the diplomatic stalemate, recent escalations have included a Russian drone strike on the headquarters of Ukraine's domestic security service (SBU) in Kyiv on Friday, which Ukrainian officials called a major escalation.
