- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
The United States military is investigating reports that a US airstrike hit a wedding ceremony in southern Iran on Tuesday, killing at least five people and wounding nearly 70 others. The incident occurred in the village of Kuhestak in Sirik County, located along the coast of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media and the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported that the victims included two children, including a four year old boy. A 22 year old woman died in the hospital shortly after the attack, bringing the death toll to five.
An analysis of verified images and video conducted by weapons experts for Reuters suggests the explosion was likely caused by a direct hit from a US munition rather than a ricochet. Three of the four experts consulted stated the weapon was likely American, while one suggested the weapon may have simply missed its intended objective. A US official, speaking anonymously, stated the government is considering multiple scenarios, including a US strike, a ricochet from an Iranian air defense missile, or an errant interceptor.
Vice President JD Vance confirmed the investigation during a White House briefing on Thursday. While stating that the US cares about the outcome, Vance expressed extreme skepticism regarding the reports, noting that Iranian state media has not been a reliable scribe during the conflict. He asserted that the United States never targets civilians in combat, though he acknowledged that mistakes sometimes happen.
Iran responded to the strike and other US airstrikes by launching missiles and drones at US bases in Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and Bahrain. Kuwaiti military officials reported that their air defenses intercepted some of these attacks. The broader conflict, which began in February, has seen a recent escalation that caused Brent crude oil prices to rise above 96 dollars a barrel.
Some reports link this incident to a previous US attack on a primary school in Minab six months ago, which Iranian officials say killed over 175 people. A preliminary internal US military inquiry reportedly found that the school strike resulted from a targeting error, though the Pentagon has not publicly released the full findings.
