The US Justice Department has dropped felony charges against David Hearn, a former Olympian, after admitting that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by a botched installation rather than vandalism. Federal prosecutors stated that the blue lining of the pool began peeling two days after the project was completed. The renovation was part of President Donald Trump's plans to remodel the capital and cost approximately 14.7 million dollars through a no bid contract. The contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, was a first time government contractor. Federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro noted that the poor quality of the work was exacerbated by a rush to finish the project before July 4 celebrations. The Department of the Interior had previously attributed the damage to vandalism and claimed that the project was an extraordinary success. The pool has been emptied and fenced off for further inspection and repairs, with a planned closure until August 10. Hearn had pleaded not guilty to the charges, though he admitted to reaching into the pool.
