A 39 year old woman and her 16 year old son, both Uzbekistan nationals, have been arrested for allegedly stealing approximately S$5,000 worth of items from the transit area of Changi Airport. The police were alerted to the incident on August 28 after a retail assistant at Terminal 2 noticed three pairs of sunglasses, valued at about S$1,460 to S$1,500, were missing from a display shelf.
CCTV footage showed the teenager taking the sunglasses and leaving the store without payment. Further investigations revealed that the 16 year old allegedly stole items totaling nearly S$5,000 from six different shops. His mother is accused of stealing a box of perfume worth approximately S$150 in a separate incident and receiving a pair of stolen sunglasses from her son.
Officers from the Airport Police Division apprehended the pair before they could leave Singapore. The stolen sunglasses and other suspected stolen items were recovered. The teenager faces six counts of theft in dwelling, while the mother faces one count of theft in dwelling and one count of receiving stolen property.
Those convicted of theft in dwelling face up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both. Receiving stolen property carries a penalty of up to five years in jail, a fine, or both. The pair were scheduled to be charged in court on September 16.
