Veneto Becomes First Center Right Region to Approve End of Life Law

The Regional Council of Veneto has approved a law regulating medically assisted suicide, making it the first region governed by a center right coalition to do so. The measure passed with 32 votes in favor, 14 against, and between 4 and 5 abstentions, depending on the source. The legislation originated as a popular initiative called Liberi subito, which was supported by 9,000 signatures from the Luca Coscioni association. The final text was approved after significant modifications through emendments, many of which were proposed by Regional President Alberto Stefani.

The law establishes procedures for assisted suicide based on the 2019 Constitutional Court ruling. It applies to patients with irreversible pathologies who depend on life sustaining treatments, experience intolerable physical or psychological suffering, and possess full mental capacity. Key provisions include the creation of a regional bioethical committee appointed by the regional government and the requirement for multidisciplinary medical commissions at each local health authority. A central figure in the process is the palliative care specialist, whose opinion is described as reinforced, meaning the commission must provide detailed justification if it decides to proceed against the specialist's advice. The law also mandates that patients be informed about palliative care and the possibility of psychological support from Pro Vita associations.

Political reactions were divided. Luca Zaia, president of the regional council, described the vote as an act of responsibility and a response to those in extreme suffering. While some members of the League and Forza Italia voted in favor or abstained, members of Fratelli d'Italia voted unanimously against the measure.
