A 49 year old woman was shot and killed by New York City police on Monday afternoon after she stabbed two people in Times Square. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm near the intersection of 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the suspect, identified as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, pulled two large knives from a bag and randomly attacked a 68 year old man and a 32 year old woman. The 32 year old woman, identified by some reports as a Bank of America vice president, died from her injuries; the man is reported to be in stable condition.
Police officers confronted the suspect near a police substation. Authorities stated that officers first attempted to use Tasers to stop her, but she continued to advance toward them. One report indicates she told officers she would rather kill them than drop the weapons. Officers then opened fire, and Cisneros later died from her wounds. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Commissioner Tisch stated that the attack appeared random and unprovoked, and investigators do not believe the incident was related to terrorism. Police noted that the suspect had a documented history of mental health contacts with law enforcement in 2018 and 2019.
