Argentina Records Worst PISA Results Since 2006

Argentina has obtained its worst results in the PISA evaluation since 2006, ranking eighth among thirteen Latin American participants and 75th out of 91 participants globally. The country saw a decline of between 11 and 13 points depending on the area evaluated, with mathematics remaining the most critical subject. In mathematics, only 24 percent of students reached the basic level, and 76 percent were unable to solve simple everyday operations. In reading, 69 percent of students failed to identify the main idea in a text of moderate length, while in science, only 41 percent reached the basic level compared to 74 percent of the OECD average. Only 1 percent of students reached advanced levels in reading and science, and less than 0.5 percent did so in mathematics. Regional leaders include Uruguay, Chile, and Costa Rica. Within Argentina, the City of Buenos Aires led in mathematics and science for the region but saw a decline in reading. The Ministry of Human Capital attributed these results to previous administrations, citing improvements in the Aprender 2025 tests. However, analysts suggest the decline is part of nearly two decades of stagnation and is not solely explained by socioeconomic inequality, as high performance is lacking across all social sectors and school management types.
