British Cyclist Finlay Tarling Dies After Collision During Volta a Portugal

Finlay Tarling, a 19 year old British cyclist, died following an accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal on Friday. Tarling was a member of the NSN Development team and the younger brother of Olympian and professional rider Josh Tarling. The incident occurred during the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe. The race was neutralized with approximately 20 to 23 kilometers remaining, and the podium ceremony was cancelled.

Reports indicate that Tarling was hit by a vehicle not associated with the race. According to the National Republican Guard, the collision involved a light goods vehicle. Some reports specify that the vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction of the peloton. The GNR Command is currently investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.

The NSN Development team withdrew from the remaining stages of the Volta a Portugal following the tragedy. However, the team stated that its WorldTour team will continue to compete in the Czech Tour and the Arctic Race of Norway in Tarling's honor. The Volta a Portugal resumed on Saturday with riders wearing black armbands and observing a minute of silence. Tributes were also held at the Czech Tour and the Arctic Race of Norway.

Condolences were issued by the UCI, the Great Britain Cycling team, and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. Tarling was a rising talent who had recently placed third in the under 23 men's individual time trial at the British Championships in June.
