A fire broke out Thursday at a Nippon Paper Industries Co. plant in Kumamoto Prefecture that had been damaged by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in late July. Local authorities stated that the blaze was extinguished after approximately six and a half hours. All 10 workers at the site evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
The fire started at a 110 meter chimney that had been damaged and was in the process of being dismantled. The company clarified that this was not the same chimney that collapsed during the earthquake. That previous collapse killed nine workers.
Nippon Paper Industries Co. noted that the dismantling work, which was expected to be finished by mid September, will now likely be delayed. The company has not yet decided when the demolition of two other chimneys damaged by the quake will begin. A local resident in his 60s reported hearing a sound like an explosion and seeing intense flames.
