Investigation Underway After Sabotage Attempt on Brandenburg Power Grid

Authorities in Brandenburg are investigating a systematic attack on the power grid near the Jänschwalde coal power plant and the Turnow Preilack substation. Unidentified perpetrators used homemade projectiles to introduce conductive material into high voltage lines to cause short circuits. While the grid operator 50 Hertz described the devices as resembling commercial New Year's Eve rockets, Interior Minister Jan Redmann stated they were specifically manufactured for this purpose. Redmann noted that while the construction required effort, it did not necessitate specialist knowledge.

Multiple devices were discovered, and some successfully caused short circuits. The grid operator reported a brief interruption, though general power supply was not affected. The plant operator, Leag, described the event as an attack and is investigating a possible link to the technical failure of one power plant block. Police are currently searching the area for further clues.

Investigators are exploring several leads regarding the perpetrators. Minister Redmann mentioned that the region has seen previous attacks on the power grid from the far left, but he also stated that foreign powers or other unknown third parties cannot be ruled out. A center left source focused its framing on the possible far left backgrounds of the attackers, while a center right source emphasized the systematic nature of the sabotage and the potential involvement of foreign actors.
