Jaguar Land Rover Unveils First Fully Electric Range Rover

Jaguar Land Rover has launched the first fully electric model of the Range Rover. The vehicle arrives after a year long delay to its planned launch. The Range Rover Electric features dual 260 kilowatt motors providing 542 horsepower and 850 newton meters of torque. It is equipped with a 118.5 kWh battery that supports 800 volt split charging, allowing a charge from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes. The company claims a maximum range of 372 miles according to WLTP standards and a real world distance of up to 333 miles. In the United States, the SE spec model starts at 138,000 dollars, while UK pricing for the Autobiography model begins at 154,070 pounds.

The vehicle is built on the MLA architecture, which was designed to be powertrain agnostic. JLR reports that the electric version weighs only 165 pounds more than the V8 model. The car maintains a design virtually identical to internal combustion versions, with a more aerodynamic front grille and wheels. It includes a 900 millimeter wading capability and traction management that controls motor speed within 50 milliseconds. JLR has filed over 300 patent applications for the vehicle and offers an eight year or 100,000 mile warranty.

Production is centered in the West Midlands, with the vehicle being built in Solihull. JLR has up skilled 10,500 workers for electric production, including 9,000 employees in Solihull. The company's Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton is producing battery packs and electric drive units. This transition occurs as JLR faces financial pressures, including a drop in first quarter profits to 66 million pounds following a fire at a Norwegian supplier and a cyber attack that halted production for over a month.
