A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial on Friday in the case of Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse accused of killing her three young children in January 2023. Judge William Sullivan made the ruling after the twelve person jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict following seven days of deliberations. The deadlock occurred despite reports that the jury was split eleven to one. The defense team made a last minute emergency appeal to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to remove the holdout juror, but the request was denied.
Clancy admitted to strangling her children, aged five, three, and eight months, in the family home in Duxbury. Following the killings, she attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and jumping from a second story window, which left her paralyzed and using a wheelchair. While she admitted to the acts, she pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her defense argued that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and auditory hallucinations, while prosecutors contended that she acted with premeditation and knew her actions were wrong.
The case has sparked a national debate on maternal mental health and the American healthcare system.
