Jury Deadlocked in Trial of Massachusetts Nurse Who Killed Three Children

A jury in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy has informed the judge that they are unable to reach a unanimous decision. Judge William Sullivan of the Plymouth Superior Court has ordered the twelve jurors, consisting of nine women and three men, to continue their deliberations. The jury has spent approximately 19 hours deliberating after a trial that included more than 80 witnesses and 300 exhibits. Clancy, a 36 year old former obstetric nurse, is accused of strangling her three children, Cora, aged 5, Dawson, aged 3, and Callan, aged 8 months, in January 2023. Following the killings, Clancy attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second story window, which left her paralyzed. The prosecution argues that Clancy acted intentionally and rationally. In contrast, the defense contends that she is not criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare psychiatric disorder. The jury is considering several possible verdicts: first degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence without parole; second degree murder, which allows for the possibility of parole; manslaughter; or not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. If the jury remains deadlocked, the judge may declare a mistrial. The case has drawn significant public attention and sparked discussions regarding women's mental health and postpartum disorders.
