The Parliament of Liechtenstein approved a citizens' initiative on Wednesday to legalize abortion during the first three months of pregnancy. The measure passed with a narrow majority of 13 votes out of 25 members present. Despite the parliamentary approval, Hereditary Prince Alois, who holds a veto right, has expressed his opposition to the initiative.
Currently, abortion is forbidden in the principality except in exceptional cases, such as when the life of the mother is in danger or in cases of rape. Those who seek an abortion risk up to one year in prison, while those who perform the procedure outside of exceptions face up to three years of imprisonment. A previous referendum on the legalization of abortion failed in 2011, with 52 percent of voters opposing it.
The initiative was supported by the left wing party Freie Liste and was backed by 4,970 signatures. Following the parliamentary vote, a motion to hold a referendum on the project was rejected by 13 votes to 12.
