Show-cause notice issued to Gautam Buddha University student over CJP protests revoked

A show-cause notice issued to Akshat Tripathi, a second year law student at Gautam Buddha University, was revoked shortly after it was served. The notice, issued by the Greater Noida Executive Magistrate on September 4, sought a personal bond of 5 lakh rupees and two sureties of equal amount to ensure the student would maintain peace for six months. The action was taken under Section 130 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), following proceedings under Sections 126 and 135.

Police reports alleged that Tripathi participated in Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in July and spread anti-government statements among university students, which could have disrupted public peace. Tripathi denied these allegations, stating that he had not been at the university for three months and was working at the Allahabad High Court in July. He also alleged that he was injured during police action on July 20.

The incident occurred following a September 1 Supreme Court order that quashed FIRs against most CJP protesters. CJP co-convener Saurav Das criticized the district administration on X, questioning if the District Magistrate had read the Supreme Court ruling and asserting that protesters have immunity from legal action. The Students' Federation of India also described the move as repressive.

While both reports agree on the sequence of events, they differ slightly on the timing of the revocation. A center-leaning source reports the notice was revoked a day later after investigation, while a center-right-leaning source states it was revoked the same day.
