The Pleno of the Superior Tribunal of Justice Desportiva (STJD) has increased the suspension of Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira to three games. The penalty follows an incident where Ferreira kicked a microphone on the sidelines during a match against Mirassol in the 25th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The suspension was previously set at two games in the first instance, but the new ruling is final and cannot be appealed.
As a result of the decision, the coach will be unable to lead his team in matches against São Paulo on Saturday, October 12, Grêmio on September 20, and Bahia on October 8. The STJD Prosecutor's Office classified the act as unsportsmanlike conduct under article 258 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice, which carries a penalty of one to six games.
Relator Antonieta Silva Pinto stated that Ferreira showed a lack of temper and set a bad example by venting emotional instability on an object, noting that such actions could incite fan hostility toward officiating crews. In related rulings, the tribunal issued a warning to referee João Victor Gobbi for ignoring the incident, while the VAR and the fourth official were acquitted.
Defense attorney André Sica criticized the ruling, arguing that the tribunal is judging the person rather than the specific act of kicking an inanimate object. Sica suggested that the court was dissatisfied with the coach's overall temperament rather than the incident itself.
