Rescue teams in Nepal have recovered two survivors more than ten days after a massive glacial and rock collapse triggered devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river valleys. Among those rescued was Chandrika Shrestha, a 64 year old woman found on the upper floor of her home in Nuwakot, which had been buried up to three and a half storeys deep in mud. Her family had already begun funeral rites in her memory before she was discovered by the Armed Police Force and airlifted to Kathmandu. Another survivor, a Chinese national named Lu Haitao, was rescued from a hydropower tunnel 225 meters deep at the Upper Trishuli I Hydropower Project. He had reportedly communicated with rescuers through translation software after his phone battery died. These rescues follow the recovery of two other workers from a nearby hydropower plant on the previous day.
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, has left a trail of immense destruction across northern Nepal and the Tibet region of China. Death tolls vary across reports, with figures ranging from 1,200 to 1,362 people confirmed dead. More than 5,000 people remain missing, including approximately 900 hydropower workers believed to be trapped in tunnels. The floods destroyed at least 69 schools, damaged over 7,500 homes, and washed away 55 kilometers of road. In the town of Betrawati, the force of the water was so great that buildings were flipped or shifted hundreds of meters from their original locations.
Humanitarian needs remain critical, with a United Nations report estimating that 35,000 people need temporary accommodation and 43,000 face immediate food insecurity. The United States has committed over 6 million dollars in assistance, though some US Congress members have called for more support and better communication with families of missing Americans. In the aftermath, survivors describe a landscape of total loss, with some residents searching for loved ones by hand in the mud. One school principal, Rajendra Dawadi, reported that he saved 900 students by ordering an immediate evacuation just minutes before his school collapsed into the river, although five students and two staff members still perished.
