US and South Korea End Joint Military Exercises Early Following Trump Order

The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea ended on August 21, nearly a week ahead of the original August 27 schedule. The drills were shortened from 11 days to five following a directive from US President Donald Trump, who cited the cost of the exercises and his close relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Due to the reduced timeline, the exercises only completed the first phase, which focuses on defense, while the counterattack focused second phase was omitted. Field exercises involving armored vehicles, military aircraft, and river crossing drills along the Imjin River were conducted.

North Korea responded to the shortened exercises by launching more than 10 short range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on August 20. Kim Yo-jong, the sister of Kim Jong-un, issued a statement ridiculing South Korea for its compliance with the US order. She described South Korea as being in a pitiful position and characterized the relationship between the two allies as one of master and servant.
