Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warnings for Thunderstorms and Flooding Across UK

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and flooding across large parts of the UK for Wednesday and Thursday. The warnings cover areas including the Midlands, northern England, East Anglia, southern England, London, and parts of east Wales. The storms are expected to be triggered by warm and humid air moving north from France.

On Wednesday, the first set of warnings will be in effect from 03:00 BST until 22:00 BST. Heavy rain of 20 to 30mm is possible in less than an hour, with some locations potentially seeing 40 to 50mm within three hours. A second warning will follow on Thursday from 06:00 BST until 22:00 BST. During this period, some areas could see 20 to 30mm of rain in three hours, and there is a small chance that east facing higher ground could receive more than 75mm within 12 hours. Accompanying hazards include frequent lightning, gusty winds, and hail measuring 1 to 2cm.

Both reports note that the risk of flash flooding is heightened because the ground is currently very dry following a period of drought. Potential impacts include surface water flooding, damage to buildings, power cuts, and disruptions to road and rail services. The Met Office noted that thunderstorms are difficult to forecast precisely because they develop quickly on a small scale.
