New York City Releases Thousands of Documents on Post-9/11 Air Quality

New York City has released more than 170,000 pages of documents regarding the official response to the September 11, 2001, attacks. The archive, made available via a free digital portal by Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration, includes internal memos, environmental reports, and communications from municipal agencies. The release comes ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks and follows a lawsuit by the advocacy group 9/11 Health Watch.

The documents reveal that city authorities repeatedly assured residents that the air near Ground Zero was safe, despite internal data and resident experiences that contradicted those claims. Some records show that tests conducted between October and November 2001 detected elevated levels of toxins, including asbestos and hazardous chemicals. One report cited by The New York Times indicated that traces of asbestos were still present up to half a mile from the World Trade Center ten months after the attacks. Specifically, dust samples taken from a building at 15 John Street in July 2002 showed asbestos in several locations, with some concentrations potentially exceeding safety limits.

City officials stated that a portion of these records, consisting of 68 boxes, was discovered in a municipal office last year. While the city intends to add more material over the coming months, reports indicate that the current release may only represent a fraction of the total air quality reports collected. Mayor Mamdani noted that previous city administrations had refused to release the documents to which New Yorkers were entitled.
